I found bugs or mold in a new bag of soil. Is that normal?Updated 2 hours ago
Usually, yes. BuildASoil soil, compost and castings are alive. Tiny white bugs and white fuzzy growth are common in biologically active products and are usually a good sign. If something looks or smells wrong, send us a photo and we will take a look.
Usually normal
- Tiny white bugs. These are most often springtails or soil mites. They are decomposers, part of the cleanup crew, and they do not harm plants.
- White fuzzy growth. This is usually fungi and mycelium breaking down organic matter, especially where fresh amendments sit on warm, moist soil. Leave it in place.
- An earthy smell. Organic amendments breaking down smell like it, especially in warm weather.
- Small holes in the bag. Bags are perforated so the contents can breathe and do not go anaerobic.
Worth a closer look
- Black or green mold, especially under an EarthBox cover. Remove the cover, scrape off the affected top layer, and let the surface get some air.
- A sour or rotten smell instead of an earthy one.
- Flying gnats coming out of the bag. See our article on getting rid of fungus gnats.
- Bugs you cannot identify, or any chewing damage on your plants.
